Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) has evolved from a speculative technological idea into a widespread influence that is transforming human societies, economies, and cognitive practices. This shift has heightened philosophical exploration into AI's ethical aspects, prompting a reassessment of core concepts like agency, responsibility, autonomy, justice, and the essence of a good life. This research article provides an in-depth analysis of AI's ethical dimensions within contemporary philosophical discussions. It draws on traditional ethical theories—utilitarianism, deontology, virtue ethics, and care ethics—alongside modern insights from thinkers such as Luciano Floridi, Nick Bostrom, Shannon Vallor, and Kate Crawford, to outline the main points of contention in current debates. These debates cover issues like algorithmic bias and fairness, moral accountability in autonomous systems, the challenge of AI consciousness and moral status, surveillance capitalism and privacy, existential risks, and the effects of generative AI on human creativity and epistemic trust. Using a qualitative methodological approach based on conceptual analysis, critical literature review, and thematic interpretation of significant philosophical texts and empirical studies on AI ethics, the article highlights ongoing conflicts between consequentialist optimization and deontological limits, between individual rights and collective welfare, and between anthropocentric and post-anthropocentric views of moral community. The data analysis indicates that while technical solutions (such as fairness metrics, explainability techniques, and value alignment protocols) tackle surface-level issues, deeper philosophical disputes about the nature of intelligence, the extent of moral consideration, and the appropriate goals of technological advancement remain unresolved. The discussion suggests that modern philosophical discourse should progress beyond reactive ethics to a proactive, culturally informed, and pluralistic ethical framework that can guide the design, implementation, and governance of AI systems. The conclusion emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and ongoing philosophical reflection to ensure AI development is directed toward human well-being rather than unchecked optimization or power concentration. This article adds to the expanding body of research that aims to establish AI ethics on solid philosophical grounds while staying responsive to rapid technological advancements.
